The artistry of production design

One of my true heroes in making the tv series is our brilliant production designer, James Merrifield. His boundless imagination, tireless attention to detail and creative execution of every set were phenomenal. The first one I visited – the Kurc’s pre-war apartment with a table set for Seder – brought me to tears due to its beauty and authenticity. James created at least 230 sets. I was struck by how thoroughly he filled each one, even if only a fraction would be seen by the audience; his aim was to support the actors with “whatever backgrounds that are required to boost the scene and the storytelling.”  You can hear about filming during a freezing Romanian winter, and much more, here.
