We Were the Lucky Ones: The Series
We Were the Lucky Ones is an adaptation of my book of the same name. It follows my relatives, the Kurc family, as they scatter at the start of the Second World War, determined to survive and to reunite. The 8-part series spans nine years and four continents and is live now on Hulu and Disney+. My heart is full of awe and gratitude for the brilliant humans who have touched this project!
Now airing overseas!
In June 2024 the series launched on Disney+ in France, UK and several other countries including Israel and Brazil. I love hearing from family and friends who are watching and sending reviews. Le Parisien calls Sur Les Ailes de la Chance (the French title) “une série poignante, déchirante, bouleversante, éprouvante évidemment. Pourtant, c’est l’espoir et…
The Paley Center for Media
I was honored to be on a panel at the Paley Center for Media, part of its PaleyImpact program to raise awareness of antisemitism. Our topic was “Preserving Survivors’ Legacy Through Holocaust Stories.” Also on the panel were two documentary film makers and Susanna Fogel, director/executive producer of “A Small Light.” We all agreed about…
Gold Derby
I love that in this Gold Derby interview, Tommy remembers how we met through his childhood buddy Robert, whom I later married. He also recalls being influenced, as a young man thinking about going into the arts, by conversations with my actor / writer / director father, Tom Hunter. You can watch the interview here.
In conversation with Tommy Kail and Zibby Owens
Tommy and I enjoyed chatting with Zibby Owens for this podcast in the series “Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books.” (How about that title – sadly it’s too often true, but luckily not always!) Tommy describes WWTLO as a story about telling a story – just after Covid isolation – about a family trying…
Fiona Weir’s global casting
Our brilliant casting director, Fiona Weir, deserves high praise for the incredible ensemble of actors she found. Speaking with Variety, Fiona said she knew from the start that “we had to create a group that organically felt like a family.” She talked about the challenges and rewards of casting internationally, with American, British and Israeli…
Joey King and Logan Lerman on the Cover of The Wrap
In The Wrap‘s digital cover story, Logan and Joey discussed their personal connections to the story behind We Were the Lucky Ones. “It was really appealing to explore the Jewish refugee experience, which I really hadn’t seen before,” Logan said. “It’s about people that are at the center of these conflicts and the real human stories and…
Morning Joe
I was delighted to join Joey and Logan on Morning Joe to discuss the series. Willie Geist asked about the research and the actors’ sense of responsibility in playing real people. Joe Scarborough was curious about the show’s timeliness. It was a pleasure to be on this live show with such perceptive and gracious hosts….
Ancestry x Hulu
Hulu partnered up with Ancestry.com to shine a light on the value of researching one’s family history. A favorite part of this video for me is catching glimpses of my cousins – in Spain, on Martha’s Vineyard – and of my real grandparents, Caroline and Eddy. Full video here.
LA Times Today
I sat down with Lisa McCree for an in-depth interview aired on LA Times Today. Along with several clips from the show, we delved into the backstory of bringing my family’s story to the screen. You can watch the interview here.
