We Were the Lucky Ones is Coming to Hulu, Joey King to Star

Friends! It’s been a minute since I’ve posted to my blog (my apologies–I’ll blame the radio silence on the pandemic, and on a looming deadline for Book 2!). Let me catch you up with the latest news.

As I reported some time ago, my dear friend Thomas Kail optioned We Were the Lucky Ones for television. After four years of conversations, brainstorms and pitches, I’m thrilled to report that we’ve gotten the green light from Hulu to stream the book as an eight-part limited series! Mega-talented screenwriter Erica Lipez will be the show runner. 20th Century Fox will be the production studio. And we have our first star attached to the project–the fabulous Joey King. We’ll start shooting in November, in Romania, and hope to air September of 2023.

It was exciting just to fantasize about the idea of my family’s story coming to life on the screen–going out with our pitch to a host of television execs was the experience of a lifetime. Now, as I sit here writing this, I’m still processing the fact that the project is real. That it’s happening! I couldn’t be more excited or honored to work with such a brilliant team of pros who are just as passionate about the story as I am, and who already feel like family. I promise to fill you in on what it’s like to be part of the Writers Room, and on all developments moving forward.

In the meantime, a heartfelt thank you to Tommy, Erica and the amazing crews at Old 320 Sycamore, Hulu and 20th for believing in this story. Thank you to Joey King for embracing the endeavor with so much heart. And most of all, thank you to my family–those here today and those who are no longer with us–whose insights, courage, perseverance and love made all of this possible.
