Several journals reported on how the We Were the Lucky Ones series underscores the importance of preserving family histories through the voices of Holocaust survivors. Cast members said they found parallels between the experiences of the characters they portrayed and those of their own grandparents or great grandparents. Some pointed out the difficulty for some survivors to recall their past. “They had to go through such horror and such dark times,” said Michael Aloni, who plays Selim, husband to Kurc sibling Mila. “Some did not say a word about what they went through.
